workshop details:
We love working with local artists, teachers and home crafters to help fire your ceramic pieces!
Please do NOT glaze your pieces until you have fired them first! All pieces must be fired twice!
Cost is $15 per kilo or $12 per kilo for 10kg or more. (Excludes booking fees).
If you think you have enough pieces for a whole kiln load (500mm x 400mm), reach out for a quote.
Steps for make-at-home clients:
- Buy the clay – buy it here
- Make at home
- Book a bisque firing online (must be fired before you can apply glaze).
- Drop off your pieces
- Book a Glazing session with us (which includes your final firing) – book glazing session here
Our firing booking process is simple:
- Choose your drop-off date and time
- Select your clay details and weight
- Pay online
- Drop off at our Towradgi studio
- We will check the weight and schedule your firing
- You will get email updates to let you know when they are ready for pick-up!
Please ensure that your pieces have been properly prepared with the following:
- Ensure no air bubbles are inside your piece. i.e. Wedge clay before you start handbuilding
- Vent your piece and ensure you don’t have any sections that are too thick. Most clays can handle up to around 2cm thick.
- Clay type has been checked for temperatures and entered into our form accurately
- Glaze types has been checked for temperature and application, and entered into our form accurately
- No glaze to be applied to the bottom of any pieces
- No runny glazes to be applied close to the base
- If you are unsure about the clay type or glaze, i.e. labels are rubbed off or unknown, we cannot fire these pieces as it will risk ruining our kiln.
NOTE: If for any reason, your ceramic pieces damage our kiln, shelves, furniture or other ceramic pieces, you may be charged for this, on top of your firing cost.

Elena King5 June 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had the best time at Black Duck Studio! The whole experience was so easy, fun and unique. The studio, setup and equipment were all top notch, the customer service was outstanding, the location was ideal, and the ease of booking and making payments through a personalised link was a welcome relief and a really nice touch. Eliza, our host, was amazing. She managed our group exceptionally well and made the experience exactly what we wanted. From the minute I walked in, she was friendly, relaxed, fun, easy to chat with and so very helpful. She made the workshop really entertaining and productive and interacted with us in the best possible way. She gave us excellent guidance and instruction, as well as space to enjoy ourselves while also paying close attention to us and ensuring we were happy with our handy work. Eliza demonstrated her skills and professionalism as an artist and a host, making us feel beyond thankful that we were in the most capable hands. She also subtly kept us on schedule—a hard task with our group! I could rave about Eliza for hours… I can't thank Black Duck Studio enough for being part of Kirsten's hens and making my life so much easier as her maid of honour. It really is much appreciated and we’re very keen to come to another workshop at Black Duck Studio in the future 🙂 Trent Featherstone21 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Such a fun way to spend a Saturday night. Something different and creative with a few drinks and the girls teaching were great! Highly recommend :) Christie Fearns13 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Black Duck Studio's classes for high schoolers are fantastic. The teacher is really supportive and knowledgeable. There is no pressure - kids can follow their own interests or do prescribed activities if they are more comfortable with that. They have created a really lovely and welcoming place, especially for creative introverts! T Williams3 March 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
